Caries in Children

Explanation to Parents about Infantile Caries Why do they appear? What can I do to prevent them from progressing? Dental Hygiene and Reviews in Children.

What is Caries?

Our teeth have a layer of Enamel on their surface that is what protects them from wear and gives them their hardness.

But in our mouth there are bacteria. Some of them, among which the Streptococcus Mutans stands out, stick to the enamel, especially in its collections and proliferate. In their growth they produce acids that degrade the Enamel. When the gap grows, so does the area in which bacteria can reproduce and, little by little, holes develop that go deeper. In this phase, caries is not detected most of the time, because it does not hurt.

If the perforation goes through the enamel completely, it still does not hurt, but sometimes we begin to notice that the tooth “clears”. That is, we perceive discomfort when taking foods that are hotter or colder than normal.

After the Enamel the perforation continues going through the Dentine . More soft and porous than enamel, the progression through it is usually faster and begins to affect the pulp (the deepest part where the nerves of the tooth are). When it irritates the nerves it is when the real pain of teeth appears, but it is late. The infection has already crossed all the barriers.

If it infects the pulp , it can progress through the root and produce inflammation in the tissues surrounding the tooth. That’s a phlegmon.

If your child facing above mentioned problem immediately consult with your dental consultant. And here we recommend Dr.Roze dental clinic in Dubai. Dr Roze providing the quality treatment with latest technique and foreign qualified doctors especially British, French and Spanish.

How is caries treated in children?

Caries in the Teeth of Milk

Most children, even with baby teeth, will not collaborate to treat cavities. Therefore, the usual thing in a tooth decay is not to do a root canal (clean and remove the infected material with a lathe to fill then the hole with a “paste”), but a seal . Sealing consists of covering the Caries with a material that prevents the Bacteria from the tooth plate to receive more food, which slows down or stops the progression of the caries long enough for the Milk Tooth to be replaced by a definitive one before Caries has pierced the Enamel.

But sometimes it has already perforated and is producing infection. In those cases, depending on the age of the child and the importance of the problem your dentist will advise you the best option, from the sealing to the extraction of the tooth of milk with children’s sedation method.

Caries in definitive Teeth

In children who already have the final teeth, the solution is usually Endodontics (clean and remove the infected material with a lathe to fill then the hole with a “Paste”). And in some cases in which the caries is already very advanced may be necessary extraction . It is again your dentist the right person to advise you.

More important: How to Prevent Caries in Children

There are children who have more facility to develop Caries than others. In some cases the Enamel is less resistant to the acids of the Bacteria of the Plate. This is something genetic and that is not avoidable.

But in most cases of Caries the problem is the Habits of those who suffer them:

Lack of dental hygiene.

When the remains of food remain on the teeth longer and in abundance, the Bacterial Plate grows. And in its deepest layers is where the germs that produce acid proliferate.

A correct dental hygiene removes the remains of food and an important part of the Bacterial Plate, preventing it from being deep enough for the bacteria that cause Caries to proliferate.

Some say that the teeth should be cleaned since they are in the mouth and that it should be done since the first milk tooth appears. There are those who advise to do it after each shot. In practice this is quite complicated to achieve in children of months. But it is also unnecessary.

The Caries in milk teeth usually appear in two locations in most cases: upper incisors and molars.

The first case is not due to a lack of dental hygiene, but appears in children who frequently drink sugary liquids under pressure (juices, infusions with sugar, shakes … in a bottle or with a straw).

In the Muelas it appears because there are remains of chewing food embedded in the natural cracks of the molars. But there are very few children who, without taking knick-knacks, often develop caries that progresses before the milk teeth are replaced by the definitive ones.

Therefore, more important than cleaning the Teeth of Milk is to avoid the excess of sugars in the Diet of the Children. Avoid sugary drinks and trinkets.

How do I recommend starting Dental Hygiene in Children?

Children are Imitation Players. Which means that if when he sees us brushing our teeth we have a brush for him that is easy to imitate us?

Thus, almost all children begin to become familiar with Dental Hygiene. Some do it before and others later. Little by little, you will begin to make the movements better and to complete the brushing better.

Two details to keep in mind:

Brush: Must be as soft as possible. Milk Teeth Enamel is softer and a hard brush can damage it, especially at the edge between the enamel and the gum.

Toothpaste: Low in fluoride and little or no. Children usually swallow toothpaste, because they like the taste. Some may even use “the brush as a spoon”. The problem is that an excess of fluoride can be harmful because it stains the teeth.

All this game should lead to when the final teeth reach the child has already the habit and the ability to make a proper tooth brushing after each meal.

Of all the meals, the essential one to avoid cavities is the brushing after the Dinner . Making this a shared habit is a good habit: Wash your hands, face and teeth after dinner, “pee” and sleep

But the best thing is to brush your teeth after every meal , and especially in those where you have taken products rich in sugar.

Adult toothpastes can be used from the time the final teeth are, but initially, as long as there is a tendency to swallow them, the less quantity is better.

Reviews by the Dentist

I usually recommend to my patients that a child go to the “Dentist” from the moment that an exploration with his collaboration is possible. In that there are children who allow it from 2 years or before and others who would not go with 40.

But even when it is not funny if a decay appears or when the final teeth arrive, everyone should have at least one revision per year.

Look for one that manages to be nice with your child, try it as many times as necessary, reward your child for their collaboration, but do it . And do not make the typical mistake of threatening him : “Brush your teeth well and do not eat trinkets or” you’ll have to go to Dentist”.
